A Website is Essential For Your Business: Why We Like WordPress!

written by Anya Amrith

WordPress

If you have a business, you should have a website. No question. Without a doubt. A website provides you with the power to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; even if your business is closed and you and your workforce have clocked off!

With more and more small businesses realising they need a good website (yes, even small businesses need a website), in order to not miss out on potential customers (and to get with the digital times), we turn our attention to a great value Content Management System (CMS) being used more than any other…Introducing, WordPress.

What is WordPress?

WordPress was first launched in 2003 where it was seen an a fairly simple (yet competent) CMS for blogging. Many Web designers thought of WordPress as a CMS best suited to blogs, and chose Joomla or Drupal for other types of website; but all has changed. WordPress is capable of acting as the backbone for all kinds of different websites, and is being used by all sorts of brands such as Samsung, Forbes, Reuters & The Rolling Stones (to name but a few)!! The Benefits of WordPress

At Aspurian Digital we are always busy designing and building  websites across various different industries, for businesses big and small. We often build unique CMS systems but we are also increasingly using WordPress for its host of great benefits…

WordPress is less expensive – WordPress is a great option for those on smaller budgets (that’s not to say huge brands don’t also utilise as your saw above). It is a ready made CMS – meaning you don’t need one built from scratch – which can be very expensive depending on functionality; and you can use any extra funds for marketing! WordPress acts a great backbone to then be tailored to how you want it to look & feel.

WordPress gives you control – No need to rely on a web developer to change or update content and images for you! Creating a new post in WordPress and uploading some images is simplicity itself; real technophobes can use WordPress without feeling intimidated.

WordPress is packed with great features – Although WordPress has retained it’s ‘easy to use’ reputation for a number of years, the list of features has grown exponentially. Menu configuration and media handling are two good examples of things that have got steadily more powerful with no sacrifice to usability. Wise enhancements in new versions of WordPress are what has evolved the platform into a great CMS for all types of websites; not merely a blogging platform.

SEO made friendly – WordPress is SEO friendly, and made easy to use; boasting features such as the ability to automatically generate search-friendly URLS & plugins such as Google XML Site Map & the All-in-one SEO pack. The SEO pack couldn’t make it easier to maintain good SEO practise and discipline; giving you the best chance of good search results.

WordPress has great functionality – There are so many quality plug-ins for WordPress that you’d be hard pressed to think of any functionality you can’t add to a WordPress site. Whether you want to take booking & payments on your site, send text messages to customers, schedule social media content or even 3D banners. What’s even better is it’s quick and easy to do! You can usually find a free plugin for what you need & most plugins are downloaded, installed and configured in a matter of minutes.

Fully Responsive – Last but certainly not least, having a site that is able to be viewed on tablets, iPhones and androids is essential. WordPress has multiple theme options that allow your site to be fully responsive! More than half of all local business searches are now carried out on mobile phones and tablets – so your site needs to be compatible! WordPress detects if it is being viewed on a mobile device and will adjust the site for mobile viewing.

Something to note… .com/.org

While we’re discussing WordPress, it’s important to note the distinction between WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG.

WordPress.COM is a hosted blogging platform that is completely free & really easy to use; but should be seen as a “starter” and not as the foundation for a major Web project. WordPress.ORG uses exactly the same framework but is installed on your own Web hosting space, allowing the use of enhanced themes and has no limits on plug ins.
