Writing tips for your website

We’ve all experienced the problem: You click onto a website searching for something in particular, and you’re presented with information that’s difficult and boring to read. Someone has clearly not thought about their website content. As a visitor, why would I want to come back to this website? I’ve just become another bounce rate statistic. Here’s how you can stop yourself from following the same mistakes as others…

Headlines

Use headlines – this could be in the form of images or just text. It will help the visitor to understand what they are viewing and aid them in finding what they’re looking for. It will also gain the attention of the visitor, so make it stand out by being bold and creative. Consider your use of colour and highlight important words such as a FREE Offer.

Hyperlinks

Include links to other pages on your site. These can be in text links or links from images and banners – this will help keep visitors on your site. In some instances, you can even link to other websites such as partner companies. Get other sites to link back to you. This will show your use of interaction as that’s what the World Wide Web is all about: connecting people together.

Short Sentences

This has got to be one of the most important points when writing content for a website. Be short and sweet, get your point across and don’t go into unnecessary detail. Keep information on the homepage specific to what the visitor needs to know – you only have a few seconds for a visitor to look at your homepage and understand what you do. If it’s unclear or not relevant, they’ll leave. So remember, SHORT AND SWEET.

Proof Read

Now, we all remember our school days and being told to “proof read your work, there might be mistakes”. Well its the same for your web content. Mistakes can look embarrassing and de-value your brand. Always check over your content carefully.

Relevant Information

Keep the information relevant to the topic, and keep in mind your target audience. Is the topic relevant to them? How will they benefit from your content?

Keywords

This is part of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). It’s important to use keywords that are relevant to your product/services.Keywords will help Google and other search engines to find your site. Without using keywords no one will be able to find your website unless they know the correct URL. Use keywords in your content, but be careful not to go overboard. The content still needs to make sense!

Don’t be boring

DONT BE BORING! This has got to be another important part of website writing. If you have boring content then you risk the visitor leaving your website. Keep your audience captivated: use colour to highlight key information. Use bullet points and sub-headings so that the user can digest information easily . Use images and graphs to visualise your information: a picture speaks a thousand words!
