How important is social media right now?
At the moment, social media is grabbing the headlines for the right and wrong reasons. For example, the Daily Mail has experienced a major backlash this week regarding an article on Ed Miliband. So how is social media changing the way we live?
More and more people are relying on social media channels for news feeds, rather than buying a paper. Online news sites seem to be the way forward, and social media channels allow people to openly express their views on current news. Twitter, for instance, is where people can express their opinions and make a united stand.
With the growth of Twitter and Instagram in recent years, it has led to more and more celebrities getting on the boat and start tweeting and posting pictures of what they are doing. By doing this, it is improving their own brand and allowing them to connect directly with fans. Twitter makes celebrities more ‘human’ and, if used correctly, can increase exposure of a celebrity.
Back in February, the use of Social Media made one song in particular quite famous. “Harlem Shake” (see video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f7wj_RcqYk) went viral – on the 2nd of February five teenagers from Queensland, Australia started the trend. Then by February 15th, around 40000 Harlem Shake videos had been uploaded. That really does show how much power social media has.
Missing people and criminals
Social Media has also led to the capture of criminals and also found missing people and items. An example of this was the Japan earthquake. Many people used social media to reach out to loved ones by contacting them and posting pictures which had great success.
What would we do without Social Media right now? 10 years from now, can you imagine how much social media will evolve?
